So, I Did a Thing…

I remember the moment vividly - the day I held my very first book in my hands, "And So She Hears!". The pages held the essence of a Black woman's resilience through her journey with hearing loss. It feels surreal to think back on this accomplishment. For five years, the idea of writing this book lingered in my mind until I finally took that first step. As I delved into the writing process, memories of my struggles with self-confidence and self-esteem flooded back. Despite the challenges, I found the courage to break free from the chains of stigma and shame, embracing myself wholeheartedly. The road was arduous, but I wouldn't trade it for anything else.

One particular moment stands out in my book, a passage where I recount the pivotal point of accepting my reliance on hearing aids in 2015. Meeting another African American individual wearing hearing aids was a revelation - a reflection of myself I had never encountered before. That encounter marked a turning point, guiding me towards acceptance of my hearing loss. Prior to that, I harbored discomfort at the mere thought of others discovering my condition, fearing judgment and prejudice. The representation I found that day acted as a beacon, illuminating the path to self-acceptance and knowledge, transforming me into a passionate advocate for those with hearing loss. Embracing this aspect of myself, I take pride in serving as a hearing loss Peer Mentor, Coach, Advocate, and now, an author.

My book is accessible in paperback or e-book versions through Amazon. “And So She Hears.” A Black Woman’s Journey with Hearing Loss.
